S. Ralph Goodwin correspondence, 1861-1863.

Civil War letters, 8 Aug. 1861 - 17 Sept. 1863, primarily re Goodwin's participation in the Virginia campaigns, addressed principally to his parents, Giles and Ethelinda Goodwin, including letters, 8 Aug. 1861, Camp Gregg, near, Vienna, Va., boasting of the Confederate army's bravery during the fight at Manassas (1st Bull Run); 2 Sept. 1861, Richmond, Va., re the prevalence of disease, particularly measles, and the poor medical care available to the troops; 25 Jan. 1863, camp near Fredericksburg, Va., re being almost barefooted in battle; 7 May 1863, camp near Fredericksburg, describing fighting at Chancellorsville; 17 Sept. 1863, Atlanta, Ga., describing a journey by train through South Carolina, with supper served by the women of Sumter; and undated fragment telling of the Confederate army's passage through Pennsylvania, presumably en route to Gettysburg, and noting that that soldiers were unable to purchase supplies with Confederate currency, and as a consequence, resorted to confiscation and looting against orders.
